Submission to National Safety and Quality Primary and Community Healthcare Standards Guide for Healthcare Services consultation

Following consultation with PCA member organisations and PCA’s Consumer and Carer representatives, PCA has provided a short submission to the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) on the draft National Safety and Quality Primary and Community Healthcare Standards Guide for Healthcare Services (the Guide). PCA focused its response on the elements related to end of life care and its delivery in the primary and community health care sector.

PCA congratulated the ASQHC on its standards and the draft guide for the primary and community health care sector. The Guide is clearly set out and will assist services in the primary and community care sector improve their delivery of end of life care. PCA comments on the Guide related to ensuring end of life care is integrated care and that communication with families and carers and or guardians, is key to delivery of quality end of life care.

PCA also reiterated the benefits to quality outcomes when palliative care is integrated early in a person’s care after diagnosis.
