Vale Les Winton – a generous supporter of palliative care research

Palliative Care Australia (PCA) was deeply saddened to recently learn of the death of Les Winton – a respected researcher and much-valued supporter of our organisation.

Les was a highly regarded social and market researcher whose career spanned more than five decades. Through Winton Research & Insights and earlier consultancies, he brought a rare combination of rigour, curiosity and creativity to projects across government, community and industry.

In recent years, Les partnered closely with PCA on our research agenda including our 2024 National Palliative Care Workforce Survey, which has helped inform our ongoing work on workforce wellbeing, remuneration and system reform.

PCA CEO, Camilla Rowland, said: “Les believed in the power of research to improve care, and he backed that belief with hands-on support and genuine partnership. He understood that evidence isn’t abstract – it shapes policy, strengthens services, and ultimately improves the experience of people with a life-limiting illness and those who love them. Les’s contribution to palliative care through the research he supported at PCA will be felt for years to come. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”

Those who worked with Les will remember not only his rigorous approach and thoughtful questions, but also his kindness and quiet determination. He brought curiosity without ego and a deep commitment to outcomes that matter – supporting work that helps the palliative care sector keep learning, improving and advocating for resources where they are most needed. Colleagues across the research community have described him as a great researcher and provider of solutions – a fitting reflection of the wisdom and generosity he brought to every project.

We extend our sincere condolences to Les’s family, friends, colleagues and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. In honouring Les’s legacy, PCA remains committed to advancing high-quality research and translation, so that palliative care continues to evolve, grounded in compassion and evidence.

Vale, Les. Thank you for your integrity, your generosity, and your enduring support of palliative care.
