The Economic Value of Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care
The Economic Value of Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care
Research analysis by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) at the University of Canberra clearly shows palliative care improves the quality of life for Australians while also reducing health care costs across Australia’s health system.
In July 2017, Palliative Care Australia commissioned the research into seven key areas:
- The Economic Value of Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care
- The Economic Benefits of Home Based Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care
- The Economic Benefits of Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care in Hospital
- The Economic Benefits of Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care in Residential Aged Care
- The Economic Benefits of Integrating Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care Into Chronic Disease Management
- The Economic Benefits of Early Access to Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care
- The Financial Costs to Families Caring for Family Members Receiving Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care
These research notes demonstrate that if the place of death and care preferences of people approaching end of life are to be realised then a much greater investment is needed in the provision of specialist palliative care services in Australia. There is clear evidence of the cost savings that accrue from palliative care and its cost-effectiveness.
