The Board of Palliative Care Australia (PCA) is pleased to announce that Rohan Greenland has been appointed as the organisation’s new chief executive officer.

Mr Greenland joins PCA from the National Heart Foundation where he has worked for more than a decade as the organisation’s National Director, Government Relations and from 2014 as General Manager, Advocacy. He has previously held roles as Director, Public Affairs at the Australian Medical Association and has worked as a political adviser to Australian national and territory ministers.

PCA Board Chair Dr Jane Fischer says Mr Greenland will be a valuable addition to the PCA team.

“Rohan has a clear vision and passion for improving palliative care in Australia. I am sure his extensive government relations and public health advocacy experience will be an immense asset to PCA. I look forward to working with him to achieve our vision of quality palliative care for all,” Dr Fischer said.

Mr Greenland says he is looking forward to taking on the challenge of promoting palliative care as a human right for all Australians to drive improvements in policy and practice.

“I am committed to delivering the key points in PCA’s strategic direction to ensure that all Australians with a life-limiting illness are able to access appropriate palliative care. I will work closely with our members, the palliative care sector, the community and governments to promote palliative care as a national health priority,” Mr Greenland said.

Rohan is a vice-president of the Public Health Association of Australia and delivered the Basil Hetzel Oration at its annual conference in September last year. He has also served as President of the Asia-Pacific Heart Network and as a member of the World Heart Federation’s Expert Advocacy Group. Rohan has previously served on the boards of ASH Australia, ACT Cancer Council, ACT Health Promotion Foundation (HealthPACT), and Focus ACT, a charity providing supported accommodation for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

He has been a member of the Australian Government’s Front-of Pack Food Labelling Project Committee, the Trans-Fat Taskforce, and the Healthy Food Partnership. He has collaborated with the global NCD Alliance and coordinated Australian advocacy seeking support for the UN high level meeting on NCDs in 2011 and the subsequent development of meaningful targets and supporting action plans.
