Art Competition Gallery 2019

The following gallery contains entries from the 2019 art competition. The theme for the competition was “To Infinity and Beyond” encouraging artists to think beyond the limitations often placed on those living with life-limiting conditions.

Winners were as follows:

Fallen Angel

The piece is composed of three individual photos comprising a beautiful golden sunrise over Moreton Bay and the aftermath of a pigeon being gruesomely attacked by other birds in my backyard. The image of what was once a beautiful creature and its uncanny posture evoked the ubiquitous depiction of a fallen angel. The scene forced me to ponder existentialism and the question of life after death - having recently lost a loved one. Regardless of ones own belief systems, I'm certain we all live in hope that life is eternal and persists into infinity and beyond.

I’m a proud 72 year old woman with indigenous heritage from the Darkinjung tribe living life full of fun, laughter and love from my family and friends. As I’m in my twilight years, I have used my life experience to express my spiritual beliefs through my aboriginal heritage with gatherings of my family, friends and travel in my art piece.

Buzz Lightyear, whose catchphrase is also "To infinity and beyond!" is flying through the stars, carrying my father to heaven, along with my favourite image of Dad (88) and Mum (81) sitting together dressed as elves last Christmas while discussing their upcoming 55th wedding anniversary. Dad died from cancer 5 days later. Although Buzz has a jet pack, here he is an Angel, hence the wings. Because he is a child's toy, I wanted his background to look like a child made it. Using a toy and a simple setting could help a child feel more comfortable talking about death.

My drawing entitled “Your Light: Inspiration” reflects the idea that each of us gives our own very special light into this world. We multiply that light and share it with others as we touch people throughout our lives. When we lose loved ones, we carry a little bit of the recently departed special light within us, passing it onto others by sharing our memories of that person. Forever growing, our lights are endless even after we are physically gone from this world. We live on by those we’ve sparked and inspired, To Infinity and Beyond.

Grief, an awful monster if you let it. Persistent to absorb your entire being. Isolating. Grief is an eternal uneasy stomach. So hard to think about yet impossible to forget. Every second that passes we are choosing who we are, how we think and how we feel. Rethink Grief. It doesn't have to be so horrible. Showing gratitude and treasuring what our loved ones taught us can change everything. Knowing they will live on in everything we say, everything we do, everything we are. You soon realise the only monster is inside your head. Achieve infinity, aim for beyond.
