Art Competition Gallery 2020

Welcome to Palliative Care Australia’s 2020 Art Competition gallery! PCA’s art competition aims to raise awareness in the community about palliative care, end-of-life care, death and bereavement. This theme for the competition was “Palliative Care… It’s more than you think!” which aimed to challenge common misconceptions about palliative care. Artists were encouraged to think beyond the care provided at the very end of life, and instead focus on how palliative care can improve quality of life, help people participate in activities that are important to them, and create opportunities for love, laughter, creativity, and fulfilment.

Winners were as follows:

  • Young Artist Award: “Chains and Cranes” by Fiona Liu
  • People’s Choice Award: “Never Lose Hope” by Mishaa Shah

I painted this to honour my father who passed away in July. He was a founder of Palliative Care in New Zealand. His gentle kind nature personified the values a good palliative care team should have. When COVID intervened and I couldn’t be physically present with him in his last days, knowing my father’s palliative care team was there gave me great comfort. One of my father’s last wishes was to sit by the sea and look out towards the horizon. And now I sit by the sea and look out towards the horizon, and think of him.

I believe we all have a story within us and as a nurse I am fortunate to get to know my patient and understand who they are, what they love and what is important to them. Palliative care is about listening to a person's story, their memories and their wishes. It's about creating a safe space that allows them to connect with their loved ones and share quality time together. Palliative care is about supporting and guiding someone on their final journey, honouring that person to the end of their story.
A story to be told

Palliative care means growth. People get perspective, become enlightened, realise what’s really important to them and change in amazing ways. I created this painting as a tribute to a friend I grew close to in hospital. She was always optimistic despite being so sick, she always aspired to get the most out of life. Her attitude inspired many and provoked growth and resilience in me. The people you meet and their stories will affect you greatly. The people that are there for your worst struggles will understand and support you in ways you never knew you needed.

My painting as done with a lot of passion,it shows strength , power and light.Palliative care patients often show the same values during the most difficult of times .Hence,the title beauty and the beast.Its a powerful feeling inside a palliative care unit,I hope my painting sheds some light on someones day.

Staying Pawsative- a happy tale: is all about using humor even when times seem dark- We have lost 7 family members through cancer and have found that the ability to share a joke or make light of a situation with each other and medical staff has helped so much and now also with the use of therapy dogs has also been a very Pawsative experience - this art piece shows we all come in different shapes and sizes and so do the therapy dogs - going for a walk -sharing a joke- and connecting with each other is so important
