Art Competition Gallery 2018

The following gallery contains entries from the 2018 art competition which followed the theme of ‘What matters most during the holiday season’. Artists were encouraged to reflect on what is most important to them in the lead up to Christmas and during the holiday season.

Winners were as follows:

Hope brings light to dark spaces, and the holiday season holds many such spaces for those with a life-limiting illness, and we who love them. When all the predictability of daily routines and treatments are interrupted by the lure of tinsel and parties, it is most important to cling to hope. Hope that a palliative holiday period will become content for treasured family memories, hope that this time brings peace and richness in the way we reach out to one another, and hope that there is laughter and joy among the tears.
Hope

This small abstract artwork reflects my personal experience to Christmas/Holiday season since my own 16 year old daughter passing away in 2016. Sometimes I feel as if I am underwater , floating surrounded by 'Stuff and Emotions" ; a sense of sadness with drive, obligation and responsibility to remain festive and happy for my other young children . But to also to remember her without too much sadness. Its about me learning to go with the flow, relaxing, trusting .. learning to breathe underwater!

Family means the world to me, particularly during the holiday season. This is a painting of my brother, who has always been strong and supportive, particularly when our mother was dying. He suffers from severe depression, although most people wouldn't know it, he puts on his happy face & appears quite jovial at times. I painted him while he was visiting last holidays and tried to capture the person within, who he tries to hide. The dripping paint symbolizes the pain he feels & his tears but the eyes tell the story.

I live in Australia but I am born in France, Holiday season to me is all about spending time with my family. I am not able to see them every holiday so when I do, it's matter a lot to me. keeping all these memories in my head.

What matters most of all, the only essential thing for Christmas is time with family or friends, especially the children. No one should be left alone at Christmas. If you know someone is battling with losing a loved one at this hard time of the year we must do what we can to help them through. Ease their sadness and grief and fill their senses with care, offers to help with chores, meals or just an ear.

The fragility of life

This work depicts the fragility of life. Coping during the final weeks of life of a loved one is a difficult process. The very moment in which they draw their last breath and cease to be, holds the greatest of pain. Like the fluid nature of blood, that pain runs deep but it is also enrobed in a gentle, pillowy sense of relief. In time, the pain dissipates and all that remains are the love and beautiful memories of moments shared. At this time of year, we recall the love and memories, and the strong connectedness of spirit despite the severance of physical ties.
