Welcome to Palliative Care Australia’s 2021 Art Competition gallery! PCA’s art competition aims to raise awareness in the community about palliative care, end-of-life care, death and bereavement. This theme for the competition was “Live as well as possible, as long as possible” highlighting an essential aspect of palliative care – allowing people with life-limiting conditions to continue to do the things they enjoy most and be around the people they love for as long as possible. 

This year’s competition again saw record participation from across the country, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the submitted artworks. 

Winners were as follows:

  • People’s Choice Award: “Not the last dance” by Phyllis Tay 
  • First Nations Artist Award: “Life Death Life Journey” by Robyn Chilcott 
  • Emerging Artist Award: “Silver Lining” by Roderick Burrows 
  • Young Artist Award: “Life is Only a Holiday” by Rebekah Dinning 
  • PCA Staff Choice Award: “A final swim for John” by Sue Corbet

With lock downs and online schooling, it is easy to feel stuck and isolated sometimes. Our family likes to go out to the beach after finishing our school work. This is our favorite beach: Tea Tree Bay in Noosa National park. Nature is beautiful and it has amazing soothing powers. I love going into the ocean, snorkeling with the fish and body surfing. It reminds me that the world is still a free and beautiful place. I put detailed lines in my work because there are many ways to look at things and enjoy the beauty of nature.

My drawing depicts how palliative care can help create quality of life and bring them great joy. Thus, improving quality of life, enjoying activities that brings them great pleasure, love, laughter and many memories to cherish forever. In the two hearts, one is filled with sweets because my grandfather liked to enjoy the naughty foods. The second heart has a house to portray home truely is where the heart is. I drew these things in the shape of a heart because all these things meant something to my pa especially the old saying, the home is where the heart is.

Adventure always starts in the family. Lots of laughter, play and love makes the family happy. And when we grow up we make our own path. We get a job and work hard but always remember that life is too short so make sure you enjoy your life too! Go out and explore the world! Do what makes u happy. Enjoy your life while you still have the energy to do it because at the end of the day, death can end our journey!

These are my husband's parents who have recently come into our care after suffering and declining in 14-months of lock-downs. My husband's Father has late stage dementia, with less than 6-months to live. His mother has advanced emphysema, and has already been hospitalised near-death three times and is now on borrowed time. This was the first outing we planned for them after they moved in with us. The sun maybe setting on their lives but their passion can still light up a room. They glow in our hearts and this photo perfectly catches that for us.
