Regulation of Advanced Practice Paramedics

Submission to the Paramedicine Board of Australia.

Palliative Care Australia supports the proposal to regulate Advanced Practice Paramedics (APPs). A regulated APP role has the potential to expand access to timely, quality palliative care and end-of-life care – especially in home, community and aged care settings and in rural areas.

PCA recommends that:

  • Palliative care capabilities be included in APP practice standards.
  • APPs have pathways to access interprofessional training and supervised practice with specialist palliative care clinicians.
  • Reforms occur to ensure APPs can access Advance Care Directives and electronic medical records.
