Paras Pappas

I first became aware of palliative care services around 25 years ago after watching an Australian documentary featuring palliative care nurses. I was deeply moved by the compassion shown to vulnerable people and their families during one of the most significant times in their lives. 

As a Social Worker with more than 30 years of experience, I have supported individuals and families through grief, loss and illness across a variety of settings. This experience has given me a deeper understanding of the emotional, practical and cultural needs that can arise during palliative care. 

In 2020, my connection to palliative care became personal when my father was diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. Over the following three years, I experienced firsthand the important role palliative care services play, both in hospital and at home, not only for the person receiving care, but also for their family and loved ones. 

Coming from a CALD background, I understand the challenges many families and communities face when having conversations about death, dying and palliative care. This was also reflected in my own family’s experience. 

Since then, I have registered as a volunteer within the palliative care sector, motivated by both my professional experience and personal connection to end-of-life care.  

I hope to contribute to more culturally sensitive, compassionate and dignified care for CALD individuals and families navigating the palliative care system.
