National Health Reform Summit
On Tuesday PCA attended the 7th National Health Reform Summit, hosted by the Australian Health Care Reform Alliance. The Summit focussed on two important areas: mental health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. Some of the key discussions focussed around ensuring strategies to implement change are led by the affected communities, and that the consumers are engaged from the point of planning through to implementation for them to be successful.
Similarities in the systems to support the needs of people with mental health issues, and those at the end of their lives was apparent. The system needs to be designed with person centred principles in mind, multi-disciplinary care is required and therefore coordination is important, and there is a need for a shift in funding models to support more community-based services.
