The Economic Value of Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care

Research analysis by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) at the University of Canberra clearly shows palliative care improves the quality of life for Australians while also reducing health care costs across Australia’s health system.

These research notes demonstrate that if the place of death and care preferences of people approaching end of life are to be realised then a much greater investment is needed in the provision of specialist palliative care services in Australia. There is clear evidence of the cost savings that accrue from palliative care and its cost-effectiveness.
