Importance of advance care planning
The ABC has focused on Australian health this week, publishing many stories about the end of life and advance care plans. CEO Liz Callaghan was quoted in an online story encouraging Australians to think and talk about what kind of death they want.
Liz points out that while we go through an often exhaustive process of preparing for birth — going to classes, talking to our family, making a birth plan — when it comes to death there is little planning and very little conversation.
“We’re ignoring those conversations, and by ignoring them we’re leaving family and loved ones with no plan and no idea what we want at a very emotional and difficult time,” Ms Callaghan says.
Radio National’s Health Report program featured Bill Silvester talking about the importance of advance care planning.
PCA is working with the Department of Health to develop the Advance Care Planning section of the My Health Record. This will provide a system to share advance care plans with hospitals and other health care providers so that it can guide decision making should people not be available to make decisions.
