LGBTI Communities Forum: Palliative care and planning for your care
PCA’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) forum was a great success attracting 30 people in Sydney. The forum was delivered in partnership with the LGBTI Health Alliance and PCA NSW. The speakers included: palliative care specialist Associate Professor Richard Chye, senior solicitor Kelly Morgan and Dr Gávi Ansara from the National LGBTI Health Alliance.
The three speakers presented on a wide range of issues including:
- What is palliative care and the goals of palliative care
- The legal issues at the end of life including advance care plans, enduring guardianship, power of attorney and wills
- Legislative and policy developments relevant to LGBTI inclusion in palliative care
- The Genders, Bodies, and Relationships Passport – a consumer-directed tool designed to implement these legislative and policy developments in the context of service provision with women and men of trans experience, people who do not identify as women or men, and people born with intersex characteristics.
The forum concluded with a panel discussion where participants and speakers engaged in discussion about the challenges facing LGBTI communities planning for the end of their life and when accessing palliative care and aged care. The success of the forum was due to the high level of engagement by all who attended.
